On a crisp winter morning, the Adventist Church on Alpha Street came alive with purpose and collaboration as it hosted an inspiring community resilience workshop focused on emergency readiness. Organised in partnership with ADRA New Zealand, Auckland Emergency Management, and Neighbourhood Support Papakura, the event brought together residents, the faith community, and resilience advocates under the uplifting theme: “Love Thy Neighbour.”
The workshop was part of ADRA’s Disaster Ready Church initiative, which encourages churches to become safe, informed hubs of support during emergencies. The bright yellow banner at the event read: “Be Safe, Be Ready”—a fitting message as communities across Aotearoa prepare for an increasingly unpredictable climate and natural disasters.

Informative Sessions with Impact
Speakers from Auckland Emergency Management shared practical, life-saving information—covering what to pack in a grab bag, when to leave home in an emergency, and how to prepare for different types of hazards. They also explained how Community Hubs operate as local gathering points where people can access support, information, and resources during a crisis. The message was clear: preparation is not just important—it’s essential.
Neighbourhood Support Papakura followed with an engaging session on Street Meets and community training. Street Meets are small, local gatherings that bring neighbours together to build connections, share emergency planning ideas, and identify strengths and vulnerabilities on their street. It’s a simple but powerful model that strengthens neighbourhood ties and lays the foundation for community-led response during emergencies. Several attendees signed up to host Street Meets in their areas, helping turn awareness into action.
The Role of the Community Resilience Network
This event was also a shining example of how the Community Resilience Network (CRN) is working in practice. The network connects local groups, churches, agencies, and residents who are passionate about building strong, connected, and disaster-ready neighbourhoods. By supporting initiatives like Street Meets and training for local hubs, the network ensures that emergency preparedness is rooted in relationships—not just resources.
Taking Action
One of the key outcomes of the day was seeing attendees commit to taking practical steps. From signing up to host a Street Meet, to expressing interest in becoming community hub volunteers, participants left with a sense of empowerment and purpose.
The Adventist Church’s use of the “Love Thy Neighbour” message—proudly displayed on shirts worn by volunteers—was more than just branding. It captured the heart of the day’s theme: we’re strongest when we care for one another.

What’s Next?
The Community Resilience Network will continue to support local churches and groups with resources, training, and coordination to build a stronger, safer Papakura. If you’re interested in joining the movement, hosting a Street Meet, or learning more about becoming a Community Hub, reach out to CRN at crn.org.nz or connect with your local Neighbourhood Support group.
Let’s keep working together to make sure every street, every neighbour, and every home is ready.
