On December 14th, 2025, members of the Papakura Community Resilience Network visited the South Auckland Response Team (NZRT-South) at their new headquarters at Ardmore Airport. Team Leader Daniel Major warmly welcomed the group and provided an in-depth introduction to the team’s mission, equipment, and structure. This visit shed light on the critical role that response teams play in strengthening our region’s emergency preparedness and response capabilities.
Who Are the South Auckland Response Team?
The South Auckland Response Team is one of three response teams in the Auckland region, complementing the teams in West and North Auckland. Established to fill a gap in Central, South, and East Auckland, the South Auckland team is a vital addition to the city’s emergency management framework. Their focus is on providing localised support during emergencies such as severe weather events, floods, or mass casualty incidents.
As an operational arm of Auckland Emergency Management, the team is composed entirely of skilled volunteers trained to professional standards. These volunteers are ready to assist emergency services during large-scale incidents where additional resources are needed. Their work ensures that communities have access to rapid, coordinated, and efficient emergency support when it matters most.

Training and Capability
The team’s recruitment process is rigorous, ensuring a high standard of competency. In their most recent intake, over 90 applicants underwent a challenging 17-hour recruitment exercise in the Hūnua Ranges. Activities included light rescue, flood response, and a simulated plane crash exercise in collaboration with Hato Hone St John and Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). Of those who participated, 35 recruits were selected to join the team.
The South Auckland Response Team is currently working toward accreditation by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in various capability strands, including:
- Foundation Skills: Evacuation, cordon management, and reconnaissance.
- Flood Response: Assisting property owners and conducting water rescues.
- Light Rescue: Casualty rescue in urban and natural settings.
- Storm Response: Clearing debris and making temporary repairs.
- Mass Casualty Support: Triage and first aid in large-scale emergencies.
These skill sets are critical for responding effectively to a range of scenarios, from severe storms to urban search and rescue operations. Training is ongoing, ensuring that team members are prepared to meet the evolving needs of their community.

A Glimpse at the Facilities and Equipment
Located at Ardmore Airport, the South Auckland Response Team’s headquarters is a hub of activity and readiness. During the visit, attendees were shown the team’s impressive array of equipment, including a soon-to-arrive truck, a command unit, and a catering trailer. The facility also houses various vehicles and trailers that enhance the team’s mobility and operational flexibility.
What stands out most is the team’s commitment to self-sufficiency. During out-of-region deployments, the team can operate independently for up to 72 hours, providing their own food, water, and shelter. This capability is crucial for ensuring their presence is an asset, not a burden, to the communities they assist.

A Legacy of Volunteerism
Response teams have been a cornerstone of New Zealand’s emergency management since the 1970s. Originally established to support Civil Defence operations, these teams have evolved to address modern challenges. Today, they stand as a testament to the power of volunteerism and community spirit.
The South Auckland Response Team is no exception. The dedication of its volunteers is inspiring, and their work highlights the importance of local participation in disaster resilience.
How You Can Get Involved
Many residents of Papakura and surrounding areas may not be aware of the vital role response teams play in their safety. The South Auckland Response Team represents an opportunity for individuals to contribute meaningfully to their community. Volunteering with the team is not only a chance to develop life-saving skills but also a way to be part of a close-knit group united by a common purpose.
