Premier Emergency Hub

Takanini Gurudwara is more than just a place of worship—it’s a trusted community anchor and one of Papakura’s designated Community Emergency Hubs.

During times of crisis, the Gurdwara opens its doors wide to support the wider community. Its newly renovated high-tech kitchen, launched in April 2024, is a key part of its emergency response capability. Originally upgraded after the COVID lockdowns and Anniversary Weekend floods, the facility has proven its value—delivering over 6,000 meals and food parcels per week during past emergencies, and continuing to support families in need every day.

Key Highlights

    • Emergency-ready kitchen with modern commercial equipment for mass food preparation

    • 30,000+ reusable utensils (plates, cups, bowls, etc.) stored onsite for rapid deployment

    • 150,000 litres of treated water stored across three large tanks

    • Capacity to support up to 5,000 people onsite during a major event

    • Outdoor spaces including fruit orchards and rubber-based open fields

    • Connected community network via WhatsApp (800+ members) for fast mobilisation

This hub has been thoughtfully designed to meet a wide range of needs in a disaster—from shelter and nourishment to information sharing and coordination. The Gurdwara also maintains strong relationships with other emergency partners, local growers, and aid agencies.

Watch this short tour of the Takanini Gurdwara and discover how this incredible community space transforms into an Emergency Hub during times of need. From a high-tech kitchen to thousands of litres of stored water and food support for local families—this is resilience in action.

    A Community That Shows Up

The Supreme Sikh Society, which oversees the Gurdwara, has a long tradition of stepping in to help—no matter your background, faith, or situation. Their teams are often among the first on the ground delivering food parcels, coordinating volunteers, and supporting recovery.

From storing emergency supplies to maintaining active community patrols and even planting fruit trees for future sustainability, the Gurdwara is a shining example of resilience in action.
